Beyond the policy: helping a vulnerable client get home

Stepping up when it matters.

When you think of an insurance broker, you might picture policies, paperwork, and protection against life’s uncertainties. But for our branch teams, it’s about much more than that – it’s about being there when it matters most.

We caught up with our Worthing branch, about how they recently helped out a client in need, showing that sometimes, a helping hand can make all the difference. Here’s how Insurance Consultant Luke Edwards stepped in to turn a confusing and distressing situation into a safe journey home.

Luke Edwards, Insurance Consultant, explained: “I had a call with our client a couple of weeks earlier, and had noticed a few odd things in our conversation. It seemed like they were struggling to remember things.

“So, when they called again saying they were in a car park but sounding disorientated, I was worried about them. They said they were trying to get to the doctors and had gotten really lost. I realised the car park was only a 10-minute drive away from the branch, so I asked our Branch Manager Danielle Lewis if I could go help our client. I just wanted to make sure they were okay.”

Danielle heartily agreed, and Luke jumped into a taxi. He explained to the taxi driver that they might need to make a couple of stops and asked him to wait if needed. Luke then found our client at a supermarket car park and secured their car before taking the taxi on to the GP Surgery.

Luke continued: “Unfortunately, our client had become very confused as it turned out to be the wrong doctor’s surgery. So, I was able to find an emergency contact for and rang them. Together, we made sure our client got home safely.

“Everyone we encountered asked how I was involved, and seemed surprised when I told them that I was his insurance broker. It goes to show just how beneficial being on the high street and a part of our community can be, as we were able to provide that in-person support.

“For me, I just did what I thought was right. I was concerned for our client’s wellbeing and if it were my parent or grandparent, it’s how I hope someone would look out for them!”

The team were relieved to hear from our client’s emergency contact later that day, to learn that all was well and thanking them for their help. And the chocolates they dropped off in branch a few days later were a lovey surprise!

Danielle remains proud of the team’s above and beyond approach: “While we’re an insurance broker, we’re also here to look out for our clients and the wider community. When someone is in distress, we’ll always do what we can to help. Luke’s quick thinking and compassion made a real difference that day, and I’m incredibly proud of the way he stepped up.

“At the end of the day, insurance is about protecting people – not just their belongings, but their wellbeing too. Moments like this remind us why we do what we do: to be there for our clients, no matter what.”
