The fun of New Year resolutions

A little reminder that there is something undeniably exciting about the start of a new year. It’s a blank slate, a fresh start, and an opportunity to reinvent ourselves.

The most common resolutions are probably no surprise to you, including:

  • Stopping smoking
  • Exercising more
  • Lose weight
  • Get more organised
  • Find a new hobby or learn a new skill
  • Travel more
  • Save more money/spend less money

All of these are positive things to consider in the pursuit of happiness and good health!

The facts: how many people stick to their New Year resolutions?

Despite the best intentions, sticking to New Year resolutions can be challenging. Studies show that while about 60% of us make New Year resolutions, only around 8% are successful in achieving them. The reasons for this vary, but common obstacles include setting unrealistic goals, lack of planning, and losing motivation over time.

A university study found that 23% of people quit their resolutions after just one week, and only 19% of resolution-setters stick with their goals for two years. It seems that while the idea of a fresh start is appealing, the reality of making lasting changes is much harder.

We’re here to be your cheerleader so set those goals and give it a go! Here are some ways to can realise those tricky resolutions:

1. Set SMART goals

Instead of vague resolutions, set SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, instead of saying “I want to get fit,” set a goal like “I will run three times a week for 30 minutes each time.” This approach makes it easier to track progress and stay motivated.

And it doesn’t have to be running, find a type of movement that you enjoy, from nature walks to yoga, it’s important you find the right fit for you.

2. Focus on one change at a time

Trying to overhaul your entire life at once can be overwhelming. Instead, to stay positive, focus on one change at a time. Once you’ve made progress in one area, you can move on to the next. This incremental approach can lead to more sustainable changes.

3. Create a plan

Having a plan in place can make a big difference. Break your goal down into smaller, manageable steps and set deadlines for each step. This can help you stay on track and make the process less daunting.

Whether it’s kept on a whiteboard, a chalkboard, in a diary or on a laptop, it doesn’t matter as long as you can see it.

4. Find a support system

Having a support system can provide encouragement and accountability. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or online community, sharing your goals with others can help you stay motivated and committed.

5. Be kind to yourself

Change is hard, and setbacks are inevitable – that’s why it’s a challenge. Instead of beating yourself up over slip-ups, practice self-compassion (or maybe even make that a New Year resolution in itself). Recognise that progress is not always linear and that it’s okay to make mistakes. What’s important is getting back on track and continuing to move forward.

6. Celebrate small wins

It’s so important that you enjoy the journey! Don’t wait until you’ve achieved your big goal to celebrate. Acknowledge and celebrate the small wins along the way. You’ve got this!

Make every day in 2025 a fresh start!

While New Year resolutions can be a fun and motivating way to start the year, they are not the only way to make positive changes.
