Staying healthy and fit is a big part of most of our lives. Whilst the summer weather is delightful, it can create quite a challenge for those who want to work out when temperatures soar.
So, what are the risks of exercising in high temperatures?
The biggest risks of exercising in the heat are dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Each of these risks can lead to very dangerous situations. Part of preventing is understanding the symptoms so we can put a stop to it fast. Symptoms to watch out for in yourself and others when exercising in the heat are – dizziness, nausea, headaches and confusion.
If you do spot any of these symptoms it is very important to act quickly:
- Move to a cooler place.
- Hydrate with either water or an electrolyte replenishing drink.
- Rest – stop working out.
If those symptoms don’t improve or they get worse seek medical help immediately.
Keeping cool when exercising in the heat
Let’s go through our biggest tips to stay safe whilst breaking a sweat in those hot temperatures:
1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Dehydration is easily avoidable if you stay hydrated whilst working out. Start hydrating well before your session. And sip water often during your workout. If you do sweat excessively consider adding electrolytes into your water to keep up hydration.
2. Avoid the midday temperature soar
Workout when it’s cooler in the mornings or late evenings. If you have no choice but to work out in the day, try to opt for an indoor session.
3. Clothing choice
Wear light, loose fitting clothing to help keep cool. You might even opt for a sun hat and UV-protective glasses and suncream if you are working out outside.
4. Listen to your body
If you notice any signs of heat stress in your body, it’s absolutely essential you take a break. Also, consider reducing both your workout intensity and weights. Remember heat increases your heart rate, making your workout even more challenging.
5. Indoor alternatives
Seek alternatives if the heat is unbearable. For example, an outdoor run can be swapped for a treadmill run.
As the temperatures rise (finally) this summer prioritising safety when working out is essential. Remember it’s better to take a break than risk your health. Stay cool, hydrated and keep up the summer fitness journey!
