Throwing the windows open in a heatwave feels blissful – until you read the small print. Many home and landlord policies say ‘accessible’ windows (such as ground floor or those you could reach from a flat roof, balcony or drainpipe) must be closed and locked when you’re not in the room.
If a burglar slips in through one left ajar, insurers can reduce or even refuse a theft claim. Use lockable restrictors or a night‑vent setting for airflow, and do a quick “windows, doors, alarms” sweep before you head out, even just for the school run.
Not sure what counts as accessible? Check your wording or ask your Howden advisor!
